The history of television in Poland dates back to 1937, when the first experimental television station was launched in Warsaw. In October 1952, the broadcasting of the regular program began with the public broadcaster - Polish Television. Public TV Program 2 has been broadcast since 1970, and since 1992 - a satellite program for foreign Poles.
The private television market has been developing in Poland since the beginning of the 90s. At that time, the first private television stations with local coverage began to function (with time most of them formed a nationwide network called Polonia 1), followed by Polsat satellite television, which obtained a nationwide license in 1994 for terrestrial broadcasting.
The next private broadcasters broadcasting the program in this way were TVN, Nasz TV (currently TV4), TV Niepokalanów (currently TV Puls ) and pay TV Canal +. More satellite programs (ATV, RTL 7) also began to appear. Among them also - since the mid-90s - the first thematic channels of foreign broadcasters broadcast in Polish (Planète +, Discovery, Eurosport, FilmNet).
Currently, there are almost 200 nationwide channels operating on the Polish television market, broadcast mainly by satellite, the majority of which have the nature of thematic channels (mainly news, documentary, film, music, sports and intended for the youngest viewers ).
