Three by three - Aleksander Fredro's diaries, including the period of childhood and military service from 1809-1814, including the period from 1813 to 1814, when the writer served as an orderly officer in the side staff of Napoleon Bonaparte; mostly written in 1844-1846. == Edition == The Memoirs of Aleksander Fredro entitled Three by Three were not intended for the general public - they were to remain a manuscript souvenir in the family, however, just before his death the author agreed to their publication and even recommended to end it with the poem Pro memoria. The above permission authorized the son of Jan Aleksander to print a diary in Warsaw Gazeta Polska in 1877 and in the collective edition of Father's Works in 1880. The next edition was prepared by Henryk Mościcki in 1917. == Content == Fredro's diaries are consistent with historical facts, though not chronological. The poet shares his experiences with readers and expresses his beliefs acquired during the war experience. Memoirs are written in a language typical of the poet, full of comedy, anecdotes (for example: Fredro, when asked what he learned from the Napoleonic campaign, replied: "Some memories, two crosses and a pedogram"). == Interpretation == In Three by Three Fredro deals with the romantic vision of Emperor Napoleon as a heroic hero, he feels cheated by him. Thus, it undermines the romantic Napoleonic myth.
