Woodcut is one of the oldest techniques of relief printing. It consists in transferring the drawing to a smoothed board from the original using tracing paper or directly painting on the board with ink or tempera. Due to the fact that the woodcut is a relief technique, convexities are left. The paint is applied to the board with a roller. Bouncing - most often - on paper is done by rubbing the bookbinding cube on the reverse side of the paper or using a hand press. The woodcut was known in China a long time ago. Also in Europe, before the invention of printing, the text was cut out in woodcut boards, and then the resulting sheets were put together and then covered with a cover, e.g. parchment. Jan Wałach took up woodcut at the instigation of his patron Jerzy Warchałowski at the turn of 1932 and 1933. The first steps in woodcutting were supervised by Stanisław Ostoja-Chrostowski - a Polish painter and graphic artist specializing in woodcut.
