The city of Pompeii is located near Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Its center is dominated by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was built thanks to the converted lawyer Bartolo Longo. There are 14 altars in the church with mosaics depicting the various mysteries of the Holy Rosary. In the main altar, on four columns of red marble, there is a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. Pilgrims and tourists visiting ancient Roman excavations come to the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. The miraculous painting haunts entire families, believing in the power of the rosary. John Paul II has been to Pompeii twice. The first time to beatify the founder of the sanctuary, Bartolo Longo, and the second time in 2003 to end the Year of the Holy Rosary.
