It occurs in Europe (except for the basin of the Glacial Ocean, northern Scotland, Ireland, the western part of the Iberian Peninsula, southern and central Italy and the western part of the Balkans) and in the basins of larger Siberian rivers up to the Lena. It prefers small and shallow water reservoirs (oxbow lakes, clay pits, peat ponds). In Poland, it is found in all lowland inland waters, stagnant and slowly flowing, in places covered with plants. It lives near the shores, at the soft and muddy bottom. Small amounts of it are bred in pond farms. It tolerates very low oxygen content. Often in such reservoirs with a high content of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, it forms a dwarf form, which has a slender, elongated body and at the age of 8-10 years it is only 9-10 cm long.
