Gibraltar macaques - a small, semi-wild [1] population of monkeys of the species Berber macaque (Latin Macaca sylvanus) living in Gibraltar. It is the only free-living monkey population on the European continent. Magotites are also threatened with extinction in North Africa (the world's total population), where their numbers range from 12 to 20 thousand [2]. There are currently around 230 individuals in Gibraltar in five separate herds; most of them live in the nature reserve located in the upper reaches of the Rock of Gibraltar. Due to the lack of a tail, some people in this British colony call them Barbary Apes or Rock Apes, even though they are not great apes [3], while others use the Spanish word monos (which refers to monkeys). Magots are unofficially considered a symbol of Gibraltar.
