Ephesus - in ancient times, one of the 12 Ionian cities in Asia Minor. It lay at the mouth of the Kaystros River into the Aegean Sea in the present-day Turkey. Even before the arrival of the Greek colonists, the peoples of the Kars and Lelegians settled there. They inhabited the Ayasuluk hillsides.
