The castle was built in the 10th century in Langeis by Count Fulko III. At the beginning, it was supposed to fulfill a defensive function - to defend the city against attacks from outside. During the reign of the English king Richard, known as the Lion Heart, the castle gained in importance and became an important strategic point. During the Hundred Years' War it was almost completely destroyed. After the war, it was rebuilt by Louis XI. It was then given a unique character. The castle now has the status of a historical monument and is protected by the French Ministry of Culture as an extremely important monument.
